Urbanization, coupled with rapid economic and population growth, is generating ever-increasing amounts of waste, with the volume of waste produced in Vietnam doubling in less than 15 years.
In an interview with *Natural Resources & Environment* newspaper regarding waste utilization and the conversion of waste into resources, Mr. Nguyen Quang Huan, Chairman of Halcom Vietnam JSC, stated that Vietnam holds great promise for converting waste into useful products. While different waste treatment technologies can be applied depending on the locality and the specific characteristics of the waste, they all aim to transform waste into valuable products; however, outdated incineration technologies that cause environmental pollution should be avoided. Regarding syngas technology, 0.5 tons of waste can generate 1 MW of electricity. This implies a potential output of 39 million MW per year (based on a 360-day operating period), an amount equivalent to the capacity of 500 wind power plants of 20 MW each.
Vietnam currently has numerous policies addressing environmental issues, yet their implementation needs to be more thorough and supported by a specific, clear, and unified management mechanism; at the same time, communication efforts must be stepped up to raise awareness among the public and the business community.
