On 6 April, 2020, the Government chief signed a decision on mechanisms to stimulate development of solar power in Viet Nam, announce new feed-in-tariffs for solar projects.

Accordingly, feed-in-tariff for projects approved by competent authorities before November 23, 2019 and starting commercial operations (part of the project or the whole project) between July 1, 2019 and December 31, 2020 shall be:

– VND 1,783/kWh or (around 7.69 cents) for floating solar power projects

– VND 1,644/kWh or (around 7.09 cents) for ground-mounted solar power projects

– VND 1,943/kWh (around 8.38 cents) for rooftop solar power projects

The new feed-in-tariffs shall be applied for 20 years since the date of commercial operations.

For other subsequent projects, the feed-in-tariffs shall be determined through bidding mechanism.

Viet Nam witnessed a huge rush in solar projects development as the validity of attractive feed-in-tariff rates ended on 30 June 2019.

According to the Viet Nam Electricity Group (EVN) as of 30 June, a total of 82 solar power plants with a cumulative capacity of 4.46GW had been connected to the national grid.
